Swing Kickball is a yard game I designed at a very young age. Originally, the game was invented to regulate who among the neighborhood kids could use the tree swing next. The game proved to be very popular amongst all kids aged 7-17. Despite containing the name “kickball,” the rules of “Swing Kickball” are very different from traditional kickball.
Swing Kickball
Swing Kickball- Advanced Rules (new rules are in bold)
New Materials: Big Obstacle (such as shed, house or some cars for the purpose of running around)
Same Number of players: 2+ people (best around 6)
New Goal: Like the basic rules, everyone is on his/her own team. However, the point of the game is to get the most Runs.
Advanced Set Up:
-Pitching and Kicking Area, the place where ball is pitched to the kicker, and where the swing and kicker reside. Distance between the two varies depending on the ball used, but 20 ft. is a good number.
-Strike Areas, out of the way spots that if the ball is kicked into the kicker receives one strike. Once 3 strikes are dealt, the kicker is out and the next person takes the swing. Strike Areas are usually places you want to discourage hitting, like flower beds and cars.
-Homerun Zone, the principal target for the kicker. It should be hard for the kicker to hit, but also hard for the catchers to retrieve the ball from. No catchers can wait in the homerun area. When the ball is kicked into the Home Run Zone, the kicker must run around the large obstacle and back to the swing. However, if the catchers tag the kicker with the ball then he/she is out. If the kicker manages to return to the swing untouched, then he/she is rewarded with a Run and may continue swinging and kicking.
New Rules:
-If the ball lands in the Homerun zone, then the kicker jumps off the swing and sprints around the big obstacle. If tagged, then the kicker is out. If the kicker makes it back, then he/she gets a run. To make it back, the kicker must have travelled in a full circle.
-If the kicker repetitively kicks the ball so that it immediately hits the ground when kicked and is impossible to catch, then a strike may be given. The power to deliver this blow may only come from the fairest player of them all, who should be crowned and given cash for his or her honesty and integrity.
-Trees! If the ball hits a tree, it can be caught and count as an out. If the ball is stuck, it is up to the catchers to get it down. If the ball is caught before it hits the ground after being dislodged, then the kicker is out. If it somehow falls from the tree into the homerun zone, it counts as a homerun.

Home Rule Example: How the Creators Play It
The pitching area is just beyond a brick walkway, facing the swing. The Homerun Zone is a deck, within its fence. The Strike Zones are the driveway and the flowerbeds. The large object that has to be run around is the house. A catcher usually stands by each of the trees (including the swing tree), and one near but not on the deck. A cheap, $1 bouncy ball, roughly soccer ball sized, is used. The ball pops often, so a large supply is kept.
Swing Kickball- Basic Rules
Materials: Swing, Bouncy Ball (soccer ball size)
Number of players: 2+ people (best around 6)
Rule: The swinger kicks a ball, and whoever catches the ball replaces the swinger. A player may be on the swing indefinitely as long as the ball is not caught.
Goal: The goal of the game is to be on the swing for as long as you can. Because of this, there are no explicit teams.
Set Up: There must be a pitching and kicking area, the place where ball is pitched to the kicker, and where the swing and kicker reside. Distance between the two varies depending on the ball used, but 20 ft. is a good number. it is better if the area in front of the swing is fairly clear of obstacles, to make catching easier.
Play follows this pattern:
-A kicker is decided, by age or height or any other means, and mounts the swing. A pitcher is also determined but may be switched out at any time. The roles are explained by their names, the pitcher pitches and the kicker kicks while swinging. The catchers can go wherever they want.
-Once the kicker has reached a sufficient height (as a courtesy the pitcher usually waits until the swinger has declared that they are ready) then the pitcher may toss the ball*. The Kicker proceeds to try and kick the ball while swinging.
-If one of the many catchers catch the ball, then the kicker is out and the victorious catcher takes the swing. Play repeats until the players decide to end the game.
*Technique- The Proper Pitch and Kick
The ball should be tossed so that it reaches the kicker at his/her lowest point on the swing, just as he/she starts to rise. The ball should be kicked with the swing of the legs naturally as the kicker swings forward. This delivers the maximum power, and the perfect lift so that it can be caught. An underhand pitch is the best, but a 'bowling pitch' (where it roll on the ground) is also acceptable. Remember! The easier it is to kick, the faster that person gets out. There are no fouls or strikes in the traditional baseball sense, the only way to get the kicker out is if it kicked.
